The Golden Lion Incident Sunday 7th August

The Directors of Wickwar Wessex Brewing Company, which is part of the Group which owns and operates the Golden Lion, were shocked at the occurrence of the above incident when, shortly before 8pm, a male entered the public house armed with a firearm.

The firearm was subsequently discharged into the floor. Thankfully, no member of the public or our staff were injured.

The police were called and responded very quickly. The aforementioned male was restrained and subsequently arrested by the police.

Outside the pub another person became involved in the incident and he too was arrested.

The Golden Lion is a well-known local pub and forms an important part of the community. It was acquired by the Wickwar Wessex Group earlier this year. The group operates 6 other pubs all within the heartland of the brewery and has never experienced an incident of this nature. The Directors, who have been involved in the brewing and pub industry for a combined total of 100 years, will not tolerate this type of behaviour, and will work closely with both the local community and the police to ensure that The Golden Lion is known as a safe, welcoming and family friendly pub.

The Directors would like to thank both its customers and staff of The Golden Lion for reacting so quickly and professionally and we offer our sincere apologies to all who may have been affected in any way by this totally unacceptable disturbance.

We wish to demonstrate to you our commitment to operate the pub as a successful community local. We would therefore like to invite all residents of the village to The Golden Lion to meet us and enjoy our hospitality. If you have any concerns, please take this opportunity to discuss them with us.

We look forward to meeting you on Thursday 8th September from 6 pm onwards.
