St Cecilia Mass Charles Gounod (1818 - 1893)

Gounod's church music has been called excessively sweet by some, but that charge cannot be justly be levelled at the Messe Solennelle de Ste. Cécile (the Solemn Mass of St. Cecilia). By far the most widely known of his religious music is the popular Ave Maria, often performed at weddings, composed to accompany the first of Bach's 48 Preludes and Fugues.

1 Kyrie; 2 Credo; 3 Offertory (Organ Solo); 4 Sanctus; 5 Benedictus; 6 Agnus Dei; 7 Gloria

St Cecilia – Patron Saint of Musicians - Feast Day: 22 November
Cecilia was one of the most revered martyrs of the Roman church. However, the only thing known for certain is that in the 2nd or 3rd century a woman called Cecilia allowed Christians to meet in her house in Trastevere, in the city of Rome, and that later the church erected on that site bore her name. She is remembered as a brave woman who gave hospitality to Christians when to do so was to risk censure and possible death.

The Wrington Vale Choral Society
The WVCS was founded in 1947. We are a group of about 35 singers from Wrington and the surrounding villages, meeting every Monday evening in term-time to “make music in a lively, friendly, enjoyable atmosphere”. Whilst we welcome anyone who enjoys singing, we take our music seriously, & hold concerts two or three times a year. We also perform at less formal events, including an evening for our Patrons, and other local occasions.

We welcome new members at any time of the year. The 2008 subscription is just £15 per term (£45 a year); full-time students and under-18s are free. To find out more contact the Secretary, Fiona Matley on 01934-862578 or e-mail choral@wrington.org.uk, or come to a rehearsal at 7.30pm on a Monday evening in term-time at St Mary's, Langford (next to Budgens). Rehearsals for the carol service begin tomorrow!

Charles Slade - Music Director
The Society are delighted to have Charles as our new Music Director. He brings a wealth of experience and energy, gained from thirty-five years in music education, as a vocal and instrumental music tutor, conductor, composer, arranger, music consultant and broadcaster.

After more than 25 years teaching in the Nottingham area, and also latterly as Director of Loughborough University Choir and St Patrick’s church choir, Nuthall, Charles recently moved to Somerset. He now lives in Taunton, directs the church choir in Bishop’s Lydeard, and teaches in Bristol.

So if you enjoy tonight’s performance, why not think about joining us, because we think you will enjoy singing with us.

Stephen Foulkes - Bass-Baritone

Stephen Foulkes sang for ten years as a lay-clerk with Bristol Cathedral Choir and is currently Bass Vicar-Choral with Wells Cathedral Choir. He is a regular soloist with choral societies around the UK and has made many broadcasts and recordings. His extensive repertoire includes works by Bach, Dvorak, Tavener and Finzi in venues as varied as Cologne, Amsterdam, New York and Nymberg in the Czech Republic.

Stephen’s performances in the UK have included most of the great works, from Handel's Messiah in Edinburgh to Monteverdi's Vespers in Truro. In 2005 he was guest soloist with the Silver Ring Choir of Bath on a tour of the Far East and New Zealand. In addition to his concert work, Stephen has sung as principal in opera, and has regularly appeared as judge and recitalist in competitions for song composers under the auspices of the English Poetry and Song Society.

Outside music his interests are mainly water-based, thanks to a previous occupation as a police frogman, and sailing remains his favourite relaxation. Waterside pubs are also a great attraction! He also enjoys horse-riding and has had a book published on the history of the Mounted Police in Bristol to mark their recent centenary. For more details visit www.stephenfoulkes.com

The 1859 WALKER ORGAN
An organ is mentioned in All Saints’ in 1636, when 2s.0d was paid for its repair! After 1640, however, no further reference is made it. Did it succumb to old age, or could there have been a more sinister reason for its disappearance from the records, connected with the rise of Puritanism?

For the next 200 years there is no mention of any organ until the present fine instrument was installed 1859 by the renowned organ builder J W Walker and Sons of London. Initially, as in many churches, it was placed under the tower. Then in 1880 it was enlarged and moved to its present position, which was until then the Lady Chapel.

It is tracker action with two manuals and a radiating pedal-board. There are 1,072 pipes, with 8 ranks on the Great, 8 on the Swell, and 2 on the Pedals, both 16ft, and 3 couplers. It has been rightly described as “small but beautifully formed”, and is admired for its very fine tonal qualities, being particularly suited to the music of Bach and Handel. The full spec is available ‘on-line’ via the National Pipe Organ Register (NPOR) on http://npor.emma.cam.ac.uk/cgi-bin/Rsearch.cgi?Fn=Rsearch&rec_index=N05648
