Appreciation by Tony Vaughan
Those who were fortunate enough to hear the Society's performance of Stainer's Crucifixion were treated to an outstanding musical event. I have attended almost all the Society's concerts over the past 40 years and I, and all those to whom I have spoken, found this a wonderful and moving experience- the best yet!

It was an emotional subject and all the singers appeared to have been inspired, not only by the words and music, but by their new Musical Director, Lloyd Buck. This young man, who already has wide experience, drew out the very best, with balanced voices, excellent diction and timing to produce a melodious and sympathetic sound.

Of the two soloists, Simon Hurrell (guest) gave a fine unforced professional performance as the Tenor, and Nicholas Maddock sang the Baritone with his equally fine and wide ranging voice. Their two voices blended harmoniously in the duets.

Recently, after retirement of the previous Musical Director, it had been feared that the Society might be disbanded, as it was taking many weeks to find a successor. However Nicholas stepped into the breach and provided the musicianship and enthusiasm to galvanize the Society back into a thriving group. This new feeling was enhanced when Lloyd Buck quickly demonstrated his skills and dedication.

The guest Organist, Mark Swinton, greatly added to the occasion with his expert and supportive playing. A real bonus for us, but he is, after all, a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists and is currently the Assistant Oganist at Bath Abbey.
