Making a Meal of it

Hundreds of people across North Somerset, many of them elderly or vulnerable, benefit from a hot mid day meal from the Council’s community meals service.

But you get more than just a hot, nutritious meal, the driver carries out a welfare check. Whilst delivering, if you’re unwell they can take action ensuring your well being, this is very reassuring for the person and their families giving them peace of mind.

The criterion for receiving the meal is: Adults aged eighteen years and over who are unable to cook a meal for themselves either on a short or long term basis.

The driver delivering the meal builds a relationship of trust with the client, often they are the only person they will see that day.

One client said: “At my age it is very difficult to go shopping for food, I am 92 years old, I always feel so much better after Gill has been and I’ve had something decent to eat. I enjoy seeing the driver each day knowing I’m going to see a friendly face, I really look forward to her visits”.

The drivers also deliver tea time and weekend frozen meals which can be re-heated by a friend or family member.

The welfare check is also part of the frozen meals provision, this service is available to those who are more able but find it difficult carrying heavy shopping home.

These meals are delivered into the person’s freezer once a week, this service gives them the freedom to choose their meal and when they want to eat.

There are a variety of meals available from Roast beef to Chicken Supreme, Vegetarian Hotpot and Ocean pie are just a few of them.

We cater for a variety of diets, including Vegetarian, Diabetic, Wheat free and Pureed food for those experiencing swallowing difficulties.

As previously mentioned, meals can be ordered either short term - if you’ve been unwell or in hospital - or longer term if required.

The cost of the meals is £2.50 for hot and weekend frozen meals, the tea meal is £2.00. The frozen meal service is £2.60 for two courses, N.B. prices are reviewed annually each April.
