The Republican denarius was minted 56 b.c. commemorating Aqua Martia, aqueduct built in 114 B.C. which provided Rome with three other aqueducts 50 million gallons of water every 24 hours. The monyer, Philippus, was the step-brother of Gaius Octavius, later Emperor Augustus. The coin shows the head of Ancus Martius Rex, who ruled 640-616 B.C. These denarii were in circulation for a century which proved that Wrington was already under Roman control soon after the conquest. J.A.H |
