Drip We waited long for you to ease the scald and drought of sun. Your storm clouds gathered, threatened, opened, yet yards away bone dry. Now that you've come, with floods and beaten down acres of corn, herbaceous borders a sorry sight and puddles where dust-baths had been, we brace ourselves for hose-pipe bans, restrictions on non-essential use, and above all do not let your taps drip. It seems that the problem is the wrong sort of rain, but I would have thought from the news we keep hearing, that the leaks from the pipes of the Company's mains would have filled up the aquifers by now Tony Wade |

When Tony Wade composed this 'Calligramme' the Thames Water area in particular was suffering from severe water shortage and chronic leakage problems. No doubt by the time this is published the South- East will be marinading in several fathoms of autumnal rain. Ed |
